The Assumption Of Virtue

At this particular moment in time, let’s go to Shakespeare’s Hamlet. The Assumption Of Virtue: Assume a virtue if you have it not. So, how do we do this, how do we do anything?

If we are able, in some way, to present to ourselves the virtue which we wish to represent, embody, or transmit, or whatever: what are the characteristics of this? What are the characteristics of being a ‘loving asshole’? I may not love this person; I may not even like them, which is even easier. How might I behave to transmit love to them? Perhaps in the faith and the confidence that Love can act through me, even though I’m a wretched, despicable, slithering worm and maggot. This has no relevance whatsoever in my practice. How I feel about it, even, has no relevance whatsoever. May I, through my actions, embody this particular quality.
